Huang Luxiang andrew

Andrew is an artist whose works utilise Chinese Ink to push the boundaries of traditional artmaking. His works take on the form of collages on canvas, combining materials like rice paper, silk and ink to integrate traditional chinese painting techniques into western artmaking mediums.

Illustrating the repetitive nature of life in a city, “Around the
World” reflects upon the perpetual schedule city dwellers are
bound by over the course of an inescapable circumstance. While
the inherent barrier between existing and living diminishes, the
struggle for purpose and direction escalates.

“大字报” Inspired by the visual qualities of HDBs in Singapore, “大字报” conveys the
stifling atmosphere caused by its repetitive design. The artist’s fatigued disposition
due to the confined spaces is reflected in the lawlessness of the architecture,
creating an ambiguous imagery that is difficult to focus on.

Paper Puppets

This work is titled “Focus”, and is inspired by the visual qualities of HDBs in Singapore, where the closely stacked living spaces and crowded neighbourhoods furnish our landscape. Despite the economic practicality of HDB flats, its repetitive design can obstruct our psychological capacity by hindering our creativity and imagination. The artist’s fatigued disposition due to the confined spaces is reflected in the lawlessness of the architecture, creating an ambiguous imagery that is difficult to focus on.
The chaotic buildings are a metaphor for our hectic lifestyles in a fast-paced city, where the act of focusing has become a challenge.

Phantasmagoria, which refers to realistic imageries that seem like a dream, is meant to reflect fantastical hallucinations potentially caused by confined living spaces in Singapore. Inspired by the Magical Realism art movement, this work conveys a trigger of the psychic, as restricted spaces limits our psychological capacity by hindering our creativity and imagination.

Disarray

The title of this work is "rhythmic suppression". This work is inspired by the visual qualities of HDBs in Singapore. The orderly architecture, closely stacked living spaces and crowded neighbourhoods furnishes our landscape. This architecture makes use of the limited space in Singapore such that it is efficient and plausible. Despite the economic practicality of HDB flats, its repetitive design can sometimes obstruct our psychological capacity by hindering our creativity and imagination. The work attempts to capture the monotonous design of HDBs and search for an equilibrium in this rhythmic space of suppression, looking for beauty in the suppressive structures, and attempts to capture organicity through the brushworks.

The expeditious life in a city frequently deters dreams and aspirations into practicality, thus this work aims to capture freedom and the ability to express oneself at greater altitudes physically and mentally. In the midst of artmaking, there is a constant attempt to achieve multilateral balance between the controlled and the uncontrollable, that which parallels our lives, where we survey conventional priorities in order to achieve an equilibrium. The element of chance that is infused into the work seeks to embody an open-ended approach, allowing multiple and varied forms of interpretation from the viewer.
